Rule that changes everything

Zermatt sits at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Swiss canton of Valais — and getting there is easier than most people expect, once you know the one rule that shapes every journey. Whether you're flying into Geneva, Zurich, Milan or Basel, this guide covers every option, every cost, and every practical detail you need to arrive without stress.

I make this journey multiple times every season as a Zermatt ski guide. Here's everything I'd tell a client before they set off.

The One Rule That Changes Everything

⚠️ Zermatt is car-free

No private vehicles are permitted inside the village. The road physically ends at the small town of Täsch, 5 kilometres away. From Täsch, everyone travels the final stretch by shuttle train (every 20 minutes, 12-minute journey) or by licensed electric taxi. Unauthorised vehicles face heavy fines. Plan for this rule and it becomes a complete non-issue — and it's what keeps Zermatt so beautifully clean, quiet and walkable.

Every route in this guide ends at Täsch or Zermatt station. Once you understand that, everything else falls into place.

🚆
By Train

Getting to Zermatt by Train

Switzerland's rail network is one of the best in the world, and the journey to Zermatt showcases exactly why. No matter which airport you arrive at, the train is the most affordable, most scenic, and often the most relaxing way to get here.

The final approach is always the same: you board the narrow-gauge Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) at either Visp or Brig, and the train climbs for around 65–70 minutes through the Vispertal valley before arriving right in the heart of the village. Trains on this final leg run every 30 minutes through the day.

From Geneva Airport (GVA)

Geneva is the closest major international airport to Zermatt and the most popular arrival point for visitors from the UK and North America. The journey involves one straightforward change at Visp.

Train Booking Tips

💡 How to get the best train fares

Book early on sbb.ch: SBB releases tickets up to six months ahead. Supersaver fares can be 50% cheaper than day-of prices.

Swiss Travel Pass: Covers unlimited SBB travel plus the MGB leg from Visp to Zermatt. Ideal if you're spending several days touring Switzerland.

Half-Fare Card: Around CHF 120 per year — gives 50% off almost all Swiss public transport. Worth it for regular visitors.

Buy flexible tickets if your flight could be delayed. Missing a non-refundable Supersaver connection means buying a new ticket.

Managing Luggage on Swiss Trains

Travelling with ski bags and large suitcases is perfectly doable, but a little planning helps.

🚐
Private Transfer

Private Taxi and Chauffeur Transfers

If you're travelling with a large group, bringing ski equipment, arriving late at night, or simply want a completely seamless experience, a private transfer is an excellent choice. Being met at arrivals by a driver holding your name — without a single bag to worry about — is hard to beat.

⚠️ The Täsch rule for taxis

Most transfer companies can only legally deliver you to Täsch. Only locally licensed operators are authorised to drive directly into Zermatt. From Täsch, your driver will arrange the final electric taxi leg to your hotel — reputable services coordinate this automatically.

Transfer Costs at a Glance

From Zurich Airport: Approximately CHF 750 for the car (not per person) in a Mercedes sedan or van — covering the roughly 254km journey in about 3 hours 40 minutes.

From Milan Malpensa: From approximately €400–€570 for a standard sedan, rising to €470–€664 for a Mercedes V-Class van. Journey time is 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes.

🚗
Car Rental

Car Rental: Drive Yourself to Täsch

Renting a car makes the most sense as part of a broader Switzerland or Italy road trip rather than as a standalone transfer. But it's a perfectly practical choice — particularly popular with visitors who want the freedom to explore at their own pace.

🅿️ The golden rule: you park at Täsch

Every visitor with a car parks at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch. The covered car park has 2,100+ spaces at approximately CHF 15–16 per day. From the terminal, a shuttle train runs every 20 minutes to Zermatt station in 12 minutes.

Driving from Swiss Airports

Both Zurich and Geneva airports have extensive car rental desks from every major brand. This is the best option for competitive pricing and a wide vehicle selection.

🛂 Swiss motorway vignette

Swiss motorways require a vignette sticker costing CHF 40, valid for one full calendar year. Available at border crossings, petrol stations, and post offices. Without it correctly displayed, you risk a fine.

The Milan Malpensa Road Trip Route

Malpensa is one of the most popular starting points for visitors combining Italy and Switzerland. Fly into Milan, spend time at Lake Como, Lake Maggiore or the Dolomites, then drive up to Zermatt.

The drive from Malpensa to Täsch covers roughly 189km and takes 3 to 3.5 hours.

From Malpensa, take the A8 north, connecting to the A26 motorway toward Gravellona Toce — flat, fast motorway driving through the northern Italian plain. Once you pass Domodossola, the road transforms into the SS33 mountain route, climbing toward the Swiss border.

🏔️ Crossing the Alps: Simplon Pass vs Tunnel

Summer: Drive over the Simplon Pass — one of the most scenic Alpine crossings in Europe, with sweeping mountain views.

Winter: The pass can close in heavy snow. The Simplon Tunnel car train at Iselle is the reliable alternative — you drive your car onto a flatbed rail wagon and the train carries you through the mountain in about 20 minutes. A unique experience, and worth doing at least once.

Cross-Border Rules (Italy to Switzerland)

Renting in Italy and driving into Switzerland is permitted with major agencies, but there are important steps:

💡 Milan to Täsch tips

Book cross-border permission early and get written confirmation. Check Simplon Pass conditions at tcs.ch before winter departures. Avoid Milan city centre — pick up at Malpensa and head straight north. In peak ski season, arrive at Matterhorn Terminal Täsch by mid-morning before it fills up.

🚁
Helicopter

Helicopter Transfer: The Dramatic Option

For those with the budget and a taste for the extraordinary, helicopter transfers from Geneva or Zurich to Zermatt take around 45 minutes. The Matterhorn from a helicopter window is one of the great travel experiences in the world.

One-way flights from Geneva run approximately CHF 4,870; round trips around CHF 7,980. Bear in mind that mountain weather can cause cancellations with little notice, and baggage capacity is very limited — a separate luggage transfer (minimum CHF 600 one way) is usually required for anything beyond hand luggage.
